Dinner or Drinks at MAX’s Wine Dive Generates Seed Money for Kula Project #FORTHEFARMER September 24

“Kula” means “A Community at Heart” in Sanskrit and translates “to eat” in Swahili. Share community comfort food at MAX’s Wine Dive in Midtown on Thursday, September 24, and your dining and drinking dollars become investments in the lives of coffee farmers in East Africa. That night, MAX’s will donate 20 percent of sales to Kula Project and its third annual #FORTHEFARMER campaign. The nonprofit Kula Project provides quality seeds for planting and links famers with fair-trade buyers to help change the opportunity landscapes for their families. Invest in a farmer and you’re investing in basics we take for granted: food, education for their children and healthcare. MAX’s Thursday night special, available after 4 p.m., is a satisfying Low Country boil, and there’s a huge selection of brews, wines by the bottle or glass and cocktails to slake thirsts. Ingest and invest. Sounds like a fair trade to us.

Atlanta Eateries are On the Ball with Catering as Tailgating Season Rushes In

Punting it right out there. In the South, we worship football. We embrace the social scene surrounding each game. We feast on rivalries, team colors, mascots, stats, touchdowns, viewing parties and especially tailgating. Do we hear an “Amen?” Yes, from Atlanta restaurants tossing catering ideas and gridiron action our way. Aah. Sweet victory.

Atkins Park Restaurant & Bar in Virginia-Highland is ACC/SEC ready with a roster of college game-day cocktails. Cheer on the old alma mater or quaff down the opponent from a list including the Georgia Salty Dawg, Roll Tide, Tech Buzz, Hotty Toddy, Fightin’ Tiger and Grinning Gator ($6-$8).

Falcons-loving chef Shaun Doty is flapping his wings to cater tailgate parties with
Bantam + Biddy’s famous Southern-inspired, farm-to-plate entrées and sides. Rise up for fried chicken tenders with wasabi honey sauce, meaty sliders, homemade creamy macaroni and cheese, Anson Mills Sea Island red peas and rice and so much more. Find catering prices and locations here. Sister restaurant, Chick-a-Biddy, guards the “fowl” line over in Atlantic Station and offers to-go and catering options for many menu favorites.

Sliders, burgers, sides, chocolate chip cookies, cheesecake and beverages from
FLIP burger boutique rock the tailgate or man cave meat-up. Coming at you: one side and two sliders for $10 per person; two sides and two sliders or one full burger for $15 per person; or two sides and two sliders or one full burger for $20 per person. Slider choices include classic, chicken or turkey. Burgers include classic, chicken, turkey, stack, fauxlafel and Oaxaca. For sides, choose kale slaw, Caesar salad, caprese salad, FLIP chips or the vegetable of the day. Add “stack” sliders, RBQ and chorizo burgers and beet salad, caprese and hummus of the day options for the $20-per-person package. Packaging, delivery fees and 18 percent gratuity will be added. Place orders before 6 p.m. on the day prior to event.

Hunker down over soft pretzels and warm cheese and beer dip, braised short rib tacos, wings, even more substantial eats and a comprehensive craft beer list at
HOBNOB Neighborhood Tavern. The Midtown eatery has your back with catering, too. Complimentary valet parking. Call 404-968-2288 for more information.

MAX’s Wine Dive keeps action fluid with $4 well drinks and two screens. Huddle up over MAX’s weekend brunch to prepare for midday game action.

Smokebelly BBQ is football’s new home stadium in Buckhead, broadcasting college and pro games over 16 televisions boasting screen sizes up to 70 inches. Both kitchen and bar craft great plays: 36 craft beers, craft cocktails and chef-crafted barbecue, as well as plating one of Buckhead’s best burgers, barbecue tapas and lighter fare.

Those hosting viewing parties because “We must protect this house!” can look to Kevin Gillespie’s
Terminus City to-go catering options of signature, down-home cuisine. Select items include whole-hog barbecue and country-fried steak along with sides like fried okra, Brunswick stew, shaker-style slaw, squash casserole and creamed corn. Visit the Facebookpage for more information, and call 404-380-1886 or email terminuscity@gunshowatl.com to place orders.

Draft your own team of smoked meats and sides to carry out from
Twin Smokers BBQ in Falcons territory -- downtown’s Luckie Marietta District. Buy brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, sausage and chicken by the pound or half pound. Throw in sides of mac ‘n cheese, collards, potato salad, coleslaw, pinto beans, “Burnt Ends” chili, garden salad and seasonal items in single, pint or quart sizes. Choose “Oak” for one meat and one side ($13 per guest), “Hickory” for two meats and two sides ($15 per guest) or “Mesquite” for three meats and three sides ($17). See full catering menu here. Drop-off catering available with 48-hour notice for parties of 25 or more; call 404-698-4707.

Field “The Tin Essentials” on the
Tin Lizzy’s Cantina catering menu to fill up on grilled chicken and/or pulled pork (add $1 per person for steak), fajita fixings, salsa and chips for $10 per person. Add fried chicken tenders and other hot or cold à la carte items, cantina salads and drinks including Tin Lizzy’s margarita mix (sorry, they can’t provide the tequila). $100 minimum order for delivery, $25 delivery fee within 10 miles. Prices exclude taxes and gratuity; 24-hour notice appreciated.

Linemen, cheerleaders and number-one fans all love queso dip, guac, salsa, chips and burritos from
Willy’s Mexicana Grill. Draw upon Tex-Mex catering options to create your own unique spread that might include a build-your-own taco, fajita or nacho bar. Full catering playbook here

Feeling the Heat? Chill with Summery Fare at Atlanta Restaurants

Honor your summer appetite by noshing and dining on lighter fare at Atlanta restaurants. Ditch lunch and dinner doldrums with these tasty perks:

Senf schnitzel (mustard schnitzel) lands the coveted schnitzel of the month spot at Der Biergarten. Dijon mustard and a light breading coat a tender pork cutlet that’s gently fried and accompanied by a side for $23. Crisp Spaten lager, beer of the month, refreshes without overwhelming ($9/liter).

The raw tuna tartare burger at FLIP burger boutique foils summer heat with a cool and colorful topping of Asian pear, pine nuts, soy dressing, wasabi mayo, compressed veggies, mango sphere and avocado ($14).

The savory-spicy yin yang of kimchi, gochujang and scallions dress Korean pork sliders ($7) at
Kaleidoscope Bistro & Pub. Dwelling on half-priced appetizers 5-6 p.m. Monday through Friday -- and your cold beverage of choice -- saves a hot-under-the-collar kind of day. Slide in for sliders and check out Kaleidoscope’s new renovations and expansion when the restaurant reopens on July 18.

Marlow's Tavern mixes a watermelon and buffalo mozzarella salad that’s pure chill with European cucumber, radish, fresh mint, olive oil and balsamic glaze ($9). Available through August 3 as part of Marlow’s Midsummer Cocktail Party. (Not available at Waterford Lakes or Woodstock locations.) While there, snap a pic of your summer fun and upload it to Marlow’s Midsummer Cocktail Party photo contest for a chance to win dinner for four (#marlowsmidsummer).

Sized right for summer appetites, small plates of fried chicken and champagne meatballs with champagne gravy ($10) are always in season at MAX’s Wine Dive in Midtown.

All three Ray’s Restaurants bring the Maine coast to metro Atlanta through their summer lobster promotion. Select a 1.25-pound whole Maine lobster with a choice of salad and side, served with drawn butter for $24.95 at Ray’s at Killer CreekRay's on the River and Ray's in the City.

Seed Kitchen & Bar sears Maine scallops and serves them alongside poblano creamed corn and chanterelles with truffle vinaigrette.

At Tin Lizzy's Cantina, a skewer of seasoned grilled shrimp reclines on a bed of seasoned rice, grilled red peppers and onions, Monterey Jack cheese and crispy tortilla strips, all drizzled with creamy avocado sauce ($9.99). Ask for the shrimp fajita skillet, and while you’re at it, add a margarita or ice-cold beer.

Stem Wine Bar has a sweet spot for Georgia peaches, pairing Marcona almond panna cotta with riesling-poached peaches from Pearson Farm.

The Southern Gentleman’s dessert menu chills with a strawberry financier ($8) with rhubarb, white chocolate ice cream and brown butter crumble and a blueberry upside-down cake ($8) topped with salted vanilla ice cream with Fruit Loop dust and cornmeal crumbs.

Glory Be! Fourth of July Sparkles at Atlanta Restaurants

Fly the flag, find the sparklers and pick a parade and fireworks to watch. Our nation’s founders had no idea we’d make such a party out of their fight for freedom, liberty and independence, but if they were here, they’d probably be celebrating in red, white and blue right along with us. Atlanta restaurants are equally patriotic, declaring they’re open for dining in or packing up meals to grab and go. Some are closed for the day, but hey, even restaurateurs love going to picnics and firework displays.

Saturday night is for sparklers and Roman candle displays, Friday night is for candle-light dinners at
Aria. The Buckhead restaurant will be closed on Saturday so staffers can celebrate Independence Day with friends, family and fireworks.

Hurray for the “Red, White and Boil” Low Country boil and brunch at
Atkins Park Restaurant & Bar in Virginia-Highland on July 4. Brunch hours of 10 a.m.-2 p.m. are ideal for Peachtree Road racers, and the Low Country boil and oyster roast will be ready to devour at noon. In the boil: wild Georgia shrimp, snow crab legs, black mussels, andouille sausage, new potatoes, sweet corn and Vidalia onions steamed in beer with Old Bay. Rip into one pound for $17.76 -- the price and year our great nation was officially founded. Includes okra fritters plus spicy remoulade, pepper vinegar and cocktail sauce. Pay $10 for a half-dozen smoked Gulf oysters on the half shell with melted leeks and Parmesan.

All four
Bantam + Biddy locations (Ansley, Crescent, Lenox and Avalon) will be open for business as usual. Peachtree Road racers, celebrate your accomplishment over food and drinks at Ansley Mall, Crescent Avenue and Lenox locations. Free up your day for holiday parade watching and pool time -- order a Bantam + Biddy family meal to go ($52, feeds 3-5 folks). If Lenox fireworks are on your horizon, picking up dinner at the Lenox location is a tailgating no-brainer. Meal includes your choice of a whole roast chicken, meatloaf or pork loin (24 oz.) served with an organic green salad, choice of dressing, cornbread (gluten-free bread upon request +$3), three generous sides and a half gallon of fresh-brewed tea. Family meal rules: take-out only, allow 30 minutes to prepare, no substitutions, 5 percent eco-friendly packaging fee added. Remember dessert! After all, it’s a holiday.

Chick-a-Biddy in Atlantic Station will remain open, serving brunch and dinner during its normal hours. Go all-American with waffles, healthy smoothies, chicken dishes (grilled or fried), Southern breakfast all day and your favorite cold beverages.

Raise a glass of sangria ($5) or tinto de verano ($4) to cheer Spain’s part in U.S. history and dine on fare influenced by the nation’s diverse cultural areas at
Gypsy Kitchen. Basque in the sunset on the Buckhead Atlanta restaurant's patio; open for dinner July 4 from 5-11 p.m.

Twenty-one bun salute? Close.
Marlow's Tavern is sending Insiders an email for a free burger with the purchase of an entrée. Sign up for the Insider’s Club online. Shout out: the Dunwoody 4th of July Parade sets off at 9 a.m. Saturday and concludes right outside the Dunwoody Village Marlow’s Tavern.

MAX's Wine Dive in Midtown is extending weekend brunch from Friday, July 3 through Saturday and Sunday. Peachtree Road Race fans, chicken and champagne call your names and numbers.

All three
Ray's Restaurants -- Ray’s in the City, Ray’s on the River and Ray’s at Killer Creek -- are open noon-8 p.m. For a tastes-rich, costs-little coastal treat, order the $16.95 lobster special featuring a one-pound whole Maine Lobster joined by drawn butter and side of your choice.

On July 4,
Smokebelly BBQ in Buckhead waves the Red, White and Q flag, pulling pork from a whole hog roast starting at 4 p.m. (while supplies last) followed by live music from 6-9 p.m. Cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon are $2 each. Reminiscent of a spiked watermelon, From the Vine mixes vodka, watermelon juice, lime juice and simple syrup for $5 (usually $7).

The Fourth of July barbecue pack from
Kevin Gillespie’s Terminus City satisfies four to six of your most-spirited friends with two pounds of barbecue pork, one pint each of coleslaw and Revival potato salad, six sandwich rolls, barbecue sauce, pork cracklings and six chocolate chip cookies for $50. Throw in a copy of Gillespie’s new cookbook “Pure Pork Awesomeness” for just $25. Orders can be placed the day of, but orders placed by July 1 are guaranteed. Pick up orders at Gunshow. To place an order or discuss catering for a larger party, call the restaurant at 404-380-1886. More info: terminuscity@gunshowatl.com.

Skipping beach-bound traffic over the holiday weekend? Sub in Buckhead-bound. Flip-flop over to
The Big Ketch Saltwater Grill for Berry United cocktails -- New Amsterdam vodka, strawberries, lemonade, simple syrup and blueberries ($7.50) -- and live music from 1-5 p.m. and 7-11 p.m. on Saturday, July 4.

The Southern Gentleman is a patriotic gent. The gastropub atop Buckhead Atlanta serves its modern take on Southern dish and libation traditions at lunch from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and dinner from 5-11 p.m. on July 4. Foil the hot day with a few $2 Miller Lites, especially refreshing post-Peachtree Road Race or pre-Lenox fireworks.

Fire up the grill and toast land stewardship, sustainability, American entrepreneurship and independence from factory-farmed meats. Order
White Oak Pastures’ grass-fed meats and pasture-raised poultry online or look for them at local stores including Atlanta-area Whole Foods Markets.

Wear your 2015 Peachtree Road Race T-shirt to
Willy’s Mexicana Grill locations on July 4 and buy a burrito for $5 (excludes airport eatery).

Atlanta Coffee Supply Group Pours Over the Southeast for 20 Years -- Now That’s a Wake Up Call

While you were sleeping, Atlanta Coffee Supply Group (ACSG) was distributing specialty hand-roasted coffees and premium teas across the Southeast for 20 years. That’s news worth jumping out of bed for -- and a whole lot of java. First brewed up in 1995, Smyrna-based ACSG has become Atlanta’s premier, full-service distributor of specialty coffees and teas and now produces its own lines of proprietary coffee and iced tea. Lakehouse Coffee features a range of 10 blends, and Blue Durango Iced Tea offers three blends -- classic, herbal and antioxidant-rich green tea with fresh mint. If you’ve sipped iced tea at Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails, MAX’s Wine Dive or Bantam + Biddy, you’ve sipped Blue Durango. Milton's executive chef Derek Dollar has been serving it for eight years. He’s also an early morning fan of Lakehouse Coffee. ACSG’s cup runs over with additional offerings: Lavazza coffees, Ghirardelli sauces, Mighty Leaf Tea, Rancilio espresso machines, Bunn coffee and tea equipment, Monin flavored syrups and Dr. Smoothie. Even while celebrating its first two decades, ACSG is steeping plans for the next 20 years, including bringing Lakehouse Coffee products to the consumer market.

Are Those Kids STILL in Study Hall? The Breakfast Club Strides into MAX’s Wine Dive as June Saturday Brunch Theme

“The Breakfast Club” turned 30 this year. School years haven’t gone by so fast for the characters repped by Molly, Ally, Judd, Emilio and Anthony. The perpetual high schoolers are still spending Saturday mornings in study hall, peeling back their stereotypes to reveal similarities and differences. Saturdays in June, you’ll find them doing so at MAX’s Wine Dive’s congenial brunch. The Midtown restaurant salutes a catchy theme each month, and “The Breakfast Club” pulls in a hall pass for June. Shermer High detention hall was never like this -- mimosas at $3 a glass, Bellinis at $5 a glass and Chef Patric Bell-Good’s brunch menu -- and the campy, coming-of-age movie circulating on screens from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. MAX’s advice: come Saturday, don’t you forget about me.

Max’s Wine Dive Monday’s a Drag Campy Viewing Parties Turn Mondays into Fun-days

Does anyone ever say, “Sure wish there were more hours to enjoy Monday?” Precisely. Monday tends to drag on the heels of its boisterous weekend siblings. Max’s Wine Dive, the Midtown restaurant and wine bar that pairs casual foods and fine wines, is out to drag the mundane weekday down a different path by teaming up with Atlanta’s best drag queens for “Monday’s a Drag” viewing parties featuring a classic drag movie or TV show each Monday from 6-10 p.m. Campy food and drink specials, such as $8 mixed berry sangria, $5 hibiscus Bellinis or $5 glasses of wine, will vary weekly and always raise spirits. Chef Patric Bell baked pink champagne cupcakes for the first “Monday’s a Drag” party -- who knows what delicacies he’ll “drag” out next. During the 6-10 p.m. timeframe, 10 percent of all food and drink sales will go to Lost-n-Found Youth, Atlanta’s only nonprofit organization dedicated to taking homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth off the streets and placing them into more permanent housing. Lost-n-Found Youth advocates and serves youth from 13-25 years of age. Stay tuned for what’s on the screen and more on Facebook or at #MondaysADrag. Save a seat on Max’s reservation page or by calling 404-249-0445.
