Marlow’s Tavern and Southern Proper Hospitality- 2018 GA Restaurant Neighbor Award Winners

Chances are there’s a Marlow’s Tavern or Southern Proper Hospitality (SPH) restaurant in your Atlanta-area neighborhood, making these two restaurant families your neighbors as well. The kind of neighbors that always welcome you to “Come on in and make yourself at home” and are always looking for a way to help others in the community. That’s why it’s no surprise the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation is recognizing Marlow’s Tavern and Southern Proper Hospitality as 2018 Georgia Restaurant Neighbor Award winners. The award honors restaurants that go above and beyond in community service and philanthropy and aims to inspire other restaurateurs to get or stay involved in their local communities. What’s next? Vying with other state-level winners for one of three national Restaurant Neighbor Awards that will send $10,000 to help support favorite charities or community projects.

Southern Proper Hospitality owns and operates The Big Ketch Saltwater Grill, Smokebelly BBQ, The Blind Pig Parlour Bar, Gypsy Kitchen, The Southern Gentleman, Beni’s Cubano, Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails and Tin Lizzy’s Cantina and is a huge proponent of supporting nonprofits such as the American Red Cross, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, New Story Charity, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and No Kid Hungry Campaign, as well as local schools. SPH hosted multiple fundraisers and participated in events to help end childhood hunger in Georgia, and SPH co-founder/partner Chris Hadermann was a part of the inaugural class of the No Kid Hungry Society that raised more than $40,000 in 2017. The efforts of staff and customers helped the restaurant group donate more than $32,000 to these causes and others in 2017.
Sterling Hospitality and Marlow’s Tavern have raised more than $900k for Special Olympics Georgia since partnering in 1999. Last year’s golf tournament alone raised $130,000. Marlow's Tavern participated in The Giving Kitchen's inaugural Dining with Gratitude event and donated $7,000 to the organization. John C. Metz, executive chef, CEO and co-founder of Marlow’s Tavern, is a big supporter of No Kid Hungry. Through in-store fundraisers and participation in Taste of the Nation, the Marlow’s Tavern team has helped raise thousands of dollars for the organization.

Congratulations to these swell neighbors and thanks for your contributions to our communities and hospitality.

School is back in session and so is Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry fundraising campaign. Timely, because concentration suffers when tummy rumblings drown out the teacher’s lesson. Marlow’s Tavern, Willy’s and Babalu are Sweet on Charity, Donate Almost $75K this Summer

That mighty mouthful satisfies senses even more when you know the restaurant behind it is reaching out to help others and aid local communities. The June 26 grand opening event for Babalu Tapas & Tacos in Midtown raised $10,426.96 in donations to be split between the Atlanta Children’s Shelter and Shepherd Center. Look for more community benefitting opportunities from this new hotspot!

Thanks to guests’ donations, Marlow’s Tavern locations raised nearly $40K for Special Olympics Georgia in June, exceeding expectations. In return for their June generosity, Marlow’s gave each guest donating $1 or more a $5 gift card to use on a future visit. The 19th Annual Marlow’s Tavern Golf Classic in Roswell on Sept. 18, hosted by Marlow’s Tavern and Sterling Spoon Culinary Management, will drive even more funds toward Special Olympics Georgia.

Willy’s Mexicana Grill strives to inspire youth and support children in our community through donations and hands-on learning experiences. Calling upon loyal customers to pitch in during June and help raise $22K in 22 days, Willy’s was thrilled to surpass its goal and present a total of $25,585 to The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. Willy’s presented the check July 11 at The Boys & Girls Clubs’ “Salsa, Salsa” event, where the Brookhaven club proved to be hot stuff, winning the competition.

Fundraising swings to the greens on Sept. 18 for the 19th Annual Marlow’s Tavern Golf Classic hosted by Marlow’s Tavern and Sterling Spoon Culinary Management. Since 1999, this annual event has raised more than $685,000 for SOGA athletes. This year’s tournament goal is to raise $95,000. Drink to Great Causes at Dolce Italian, Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar, Gunshow, Gypsy Kitchen and Marlow’s Tavern during Negroni Week, through June 11

As they have done each year since launching Negroni Week in 2013, Imbibe Magazine and Campari are again partnering with restaurants and bars around the world to celebrate one of the world’s great cocktails and raise money for a wide range of charitable causes. Atlanta is well stocked with participants for Negroni Week 2017, which runs through Sunday, June 11, and we have our favorites. Gypsy Kitchen and Dolce Italian in The Shops Buckhead Atlanta and Marlow’s Tavern locations in Avalon, Brookhaven, Alpharetta and Midtown are making donations to The Giving Kitchen. Marlow’s Tavern is mixing a special Negroni Week “Left Coast Negroni” cocktail containing Aviation Gin, Giffard Pamplemousse, Grand Poppy and Bittercube Jamaican bitters #2. Sip on a three-week barrel-aged Negroni cocktail with Aviation Gin, vermouth and Campari at Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar and you’ll support No Kid Hungry. Gunshow, chef Kevin Gillespie’s Glenwood Park restaurant, will donate to SHARE, which provides dedicated experienced support for women facing breast and ovarian cancers. Enjoy a Negroni cocktail “on the rocks” knowing you’re helping smooth life’s rocky places for those aided by these charities.

TGIF AND Cinco de Mayo Friday, May 5

Get ready to “Cinco” into the weekend this year because Cinco de Mayo falls on a Friday and Saturdays are meant for sleeping in. And, at some restaurants, the celebrations kick in early in the week and carry on through the weekend!

Communion Cantina throws open its backyard bar and eatery for the warm weather season on Cinco de Mayo. Cantina? Si! Kevin Gillespie has transformed the outdoor gathering place behind Revival, his popular Decatur restaurant, into a casual Mexican cantina -- just in time for Cinco de Mayo celebrating. The cantina food truck, with a menu driven by executive chef Andreas Müller, will sell five different varieties of tacos, chips and salsa, cheese dip and other Mexican staples. Border heat calls for cocktails, margaritas, sangria, frozen drinks like frosé and frozen mint juleps along with bottled and draft beer featuring West Coast and Mexican brews. Hours are Friday 5-10 p.m., Saturday 1-10 p.m., Sunday 1-9 p.m. and Thursday 5-10 p.m. (beginning May 11).

“Drinko de Mayo,” going on through May 7 at Tin Lizzy’s Cantina, syncs sipping celebratory Cincoritas and pouring donations into a great cause. The FlexMex gang is donating 50 cents from every Cincorita purchased to Bert’s Big Adventure, a non-profit providing chronic or terminally ill children and their families with five-day, all-expenses-paid adventures to Disney World. Drink specials, music and more round out the weeklong “fiestivities.” Say “Ole!” to Corona Light on draft ($4.25/$7), Grand Marnier and Jager floaters ($3) and shots ($5), 1800 Tequila shots ($5) and 1800 Cincorita -- small ($8) or large ($13). On May 5, DJs supersize the party music at each restaurant, and guests can buy cans of Corona and Modelo ($5) at locations with outdoor bars. Southside Steve from Rock 100.5 broadcasts live from the Mall of Georgia Tin Lizzy’s at 5 p.m. followed by Slippery When Wet (Bon Jovi cover band) turning up courtyard party volume at 7 p.m.

In Town Brookhaven, the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta rollicks at Jefe’s Tacos & Tequila starting at 2 p.m. There’s no cover charge for this party that salsas out onto the patio with live music and food and drink specials. Please your crowd with an assembly of tacos with personality, bearing names like Pinche Pollo, Trailer on Fire, Redneck, Mamacita and Bravocado or Jefe’s Mexi-spun faves such as smoked chicken taquitos, Nacho Daddy, crispy calamari and crispy smoked wings with Jefe’s hot sauce.

For a new take on the classic margarita, visit your neighborhood Marlow’s Tavern and enjoy one of Rick Blumberg’s cocktail creations. Previously the beverage director of Bacchanalia Restaurant Group, Rick’s signature Blood Orange Margarita featuring Herradura tequila and Pür Spice Blood Orange liqueur or “Secret Recipe” Red or White Sangria are sure to put you in the Cinco spirit! Cinco de Mayo-ish bites include Marlow’s rave-worthy Shrimp and Crab “Nacho” Plate and “Infamous” Fish Tacos.

Taco Mac is turning this weekend into a two-day celebration. Between Cinco on Friday and the Derby on Saturday, Taco Mac has invented “Derby de Mayo,” featuring $4 select Mexican beers with new Brewniversity credits, a Herradura Barrel Select flight and traditional, black cherry, watermelon and strawberry margaritas. Cheers to this weekend!

All three Ray’s Restaurants swing into Cinco de Mayo mode, resurrecting the beloved Ray’s Rio Bravo chile con queso recipe for guests to spoon up in bar and lounge areas on May 5. Pop into Ray’s in the City, Ray’s on the River or Ray’s at Killer Creek to dip into this delish dish.

Willy’s Mexicana Grill makes it easy to squeeze some Cinco de Mayo flavor into your day at 30 locations covering Atlanta and reaching out to Athens and Columbus. Me, oh “Mayo,” can’t get out? Willy’s catering brings the “Cuatro de Mayo” party to you on May 4, offering free cheese dip for up to 20 people on all deliveries made May 4. Minimum $250 catering order and 24-hour notice required; must call 404-422-7107 and mention the offer to redeem. On May 5, live music plays from 6-9 p.m. at the Howell Mill store and 5-8 p.m. at Willy’s - Piedmont Park. Want a margarita? There’s one with your name on it at the Howell Mill, Midtown, Edgewood, Brookhaven and Peachtree City Willy’s locations.

HOBNOB Neighborhood Tavern is always ready to celebrate, and Cinco de Mayo is no exception. Stop into the Midtown watering hole for beers from around here and around the world, including Corona, a Cinco de Mayo classic. Mixologists stand ready to craft your margarita or perhaps a Spanish Inquisition signature cocktail starring Medieval tequila ($11). Share some of HOBNOB’s popular starters such as braised short rib tacos (2/$8.95 or 3/$11.95); New Generation duck nachos ($11.95) topped with duck confit, fontina cheese, Fresno peppers and HOBNOB’s own date-fig jam and roasted tomato pesto; spicy chipotle cornmeal-crusted fried green tomatoes ($8.50); or braised short rib lettuce wraps with chimichurri sauce ($11). Does a Margherita pizza count ($12.75)?

Marlow’s Tavern, Tin Lizzy’s Cantina, Rize Artisan Pizza + Salads Vie for “Chompionship” in Atlanta Eats Elite Eats 2017

There’s more than one set of brackets being filled in this town – the one for hoops and Atlanta Eat’s Elite Eats 2017 for top scoops, i.e., 64 of the most mouthwatering dishes in Atlanta. The Smoked Trout Dip at Marlow’s Tavern holds an Elite Eats bracket spot in the “Bar Bites” division. Chicken nachos from Tin Lizzy’s Cantina line up in the “Around the World” division. Asian BBQ chicken pizza from Rize Artisan Pizza + Salads slices into the “Insane Italian” division. Winners from each of these divisions will eventually face off with the winner of the fourth division, “The South Rules.” As with the basketball brackets we so painstakingly fill, restaurants progress through similar rounds until there is only one dish left as “Chompion.” Vote for your favorites in each division here; number of votes determines advancement. First round of voting closes at 4 p.m. on Mar. 19, and the winners will be announced the next day. The process continues with round voting closing Mar. 26, 28 and 30 then April 1 and 3 until the “Chompion” is announced April 4. During each round, one person will win dinner for two at one of the spots they vote for.
