Fried
green tomatoes with goat cheese and red pepper coulis at South City Kitchen Midtown
has spoken to Southern heritage and big city sophistication since the
restaurant first welcomed guests in 1993. Just visualizing it can make your mouth water. In 1996, Bold American Events opened on the
other side of downtown Atlanta in a 100-year-old renovated Westside
factory…before trendy became a Westside adjective. Over the years, Fifth Group Restaurants has added more in-town dining destinations: La Tavola
Trattoria, Ecco, South City Kitchen Vinings,
The Original El Taco, Alma Cocina and Lure. The different cuisines offer something appealing to every type of Atlantan. With such draw, no wonder that the
restaurant group is an Atlanta
Hospitality Hall of Fame Member of the Year finalist. The 15th
annual Hospitality Hall of Fame celebration will take place on November 12 at
The Foundry at Puritan Mill. In addition to honoring Atlanta’s hospitality
industry greats, this year’s event will mark the year end celebration of the

Get a Taste of the Highlands This Saturday!
![]() |
| Photo via Taste of the Highlands on Facebook |
As someone who's lived in the Virginia-Highlands for four years, I have to say it's my favorite part of town. One of the things I love most is that there are so many great restaurants in the area. If you haven't had a chance to try as many as you'd like, you should definitely make your way to the 10th Annual Taste of the Highlands this Saturday, May 19 from 2 - 5 p.m. in John Howell Park. You'll get to sample some of the best menu items from more than 30 restaurants including Fifth Group Restaurants Alma Cocina, Ecco, La Tavola Trattoria, The Original El Taco and South City Kitchen as well as neighborhood favorites Alon's Bakery and Market and Atkins Park Tavern, while listening to live music from bands Sailing to Denver and DejaBlue Grass Band. Proceeds from the event benefit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, so if anyone tries to judge you for going back for seconds and thirds, you can tell them it's for the kids. The weather forecast is calling for sunny skies for this outdoor event, so go ahead and buy your tickets today before they sell out. You can purchase tickets online before Friday at noon and pick them up at the gate the day of the event. Advance tickets prices are $40 per adult, $25 for students with ID and free for children under 5 years. Tickets will be $50 per adult the day of the event.

A Few of Our Favorites From the AJC "Top 50" List
As you have probably already read, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Chief Dining Critic John Kessler recently wrote about a list of his "Top 50" restaurants, which he hasn't compiled since 2004. He notes that the passing years have brought a rewarding variety of foods and atmospheres to Atlanta, and we definitely agree. Some of our longtime favorites were included in the list: Aria (pictured right), Ecco and Woodfire Grill. And two more of our top picks were noted on John Kessler's blog as coming oh-so-close to making the list: JCT. Kitchen & Bar and La Tavola Trattoria. Visit the links above to sample John's thoughts, and be sure to play with the interactive map to locate these winning spots for your next dinner outing. You won't be disappointed!

Rotten Egg or Eggs-Traordinary? You Be the Judge at This Year’s Featherfest!
Twenty-thousand poultry fans are alighting in Atlanta January 22 - 27. No need to be chicken or take cover. They're migrating through the Georgia World Congress Center for the annual International Poultry Expo/International Feed Expo. Featherfest will draw them out for nourishment on egg-ceptional appetizers and entrées that include poultry meat at more than 50 Atlanta restaurants including Alma Cocina, La Tavola Trattoria,The Original El Taco, Ray's in the City, South City Kitchen - Midtown andSpice Market in the W Atlanta-Midtown. Gather a gaggle of roost mates (flighty friends, too) and flock along to dine then rate the dishes from one "rotten egg" to "eggs-traordinary" at Atlanta.net through January 26. Who knows, you might win an iPod nano for your eggs-cellent opinions.

It's Follow Friday; Meet Our Tweep of the Week @roycetakespics
"Badass" La Tavola Trattoria Barkeep Alli Royce is artsy in so many ways. Libation creations at the bar. Eat-it-up food and party photography. Serious documentary pix. Abstracts involving paint and canvas.
Even though she's a "badass," this Atlanta native is an all-around nice gal, as anyone can see by her tweets (@roycetakespics). For those good-enough-to-lick photos, check out her website.

It's Time to Salute Sandwiches!

Since August is National Sandwich Month, we here at Melissa Libby & Associates are providing you with a list of the city’s top sandwich options. Get out there and celebrate today!
For an awesome handful in Roswell, go for the grilled chicken club at Aqua blue. Joining grilled chicken between the bread are applewood smoked bacon, tomato, butter lettuce and honey mustard.
The hearty American tavern fare at area Marlow's Tavern locations is exemplified by the prime rib French dip boasting thinly shaved roasted prime rib, Swiss cheese, caramelized onions and mayonnaise on a soft Cuban roll.
Atkins Park toys with spicy yet cool Texas fried chicken and wing sauce topped with lettuce, tomato and blue cheese dressing.
We're crazy about the classic pressed Cuban and all of its relatives with mojo on the sandwich menu at the Crazy Cuban on 14th Street in Midtown. Enough said.
With the kids heading back to school, adults can indulge in the "Grown-up" grilled cheese at JCT. Kitchen & Bar: assorted cheeses and roasted tomato on buttered semolina toast, accompanied by a lycopene-laden cup of tomato soup.
All three Ray's Restaurants offer the beloved grouper sandwich, served your way -- fried, blackened or grilled and topped with lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese and house-made tartar sauce. Enjoy it over lunch at Ray's in the City; you can relish it at lunch or dinner at Ray's on the River and Ray's Killer Creek.
Gracing the weekend brunch menu at La Tavola Trattoria in Virginia Highland, the hot chicken panino bursts with grilled chicken, pesto, tomato, fontina cheese and comes with a refreshing zucchini and tomato salad.
Small packages yield big, tender bites when you bite into the petite filet mignon sandwiches from the Bar Bites menu at Morton's The Steakhouse.
How about some art appreciation at Ormsby's? "The art of the Reuben" (Uncle Art that is), piled with corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island on grilled pumpernickel.
Pacci Ristorante in Midtown has their own special panino, a turkey panino filled with turkey, provolone and tomato enhanced with basil aioli.
Y'all come to South City Kitchen Midtown (lunch) and South City Kitchen Vinings (dinner) to sink your teeth into a mouth of the South classic -- the catfish Reuben with its crispy Old Bay-dusted catfish, Swiss cheese, shaved Benton's ham, cole slaw and Thousand Island remoulade piled on griddled rye and served with house-made chips.
For a mini vacation on a croissant, zip up to Wolf Mountain Vineyards & Winery in Dahlonega for the apple basil chicken salad sandwich. Mouthwatering, homemade chicken salad with Granny Smith apples, toasted almonds and fresh basil spills out of a flaky croissant and shares the plate with Mediterranean pasta salad.
And if you want to DIY for the friends gathering at your place tonight, try this recipe for open-faced egg sandwiches with tomato basil salsa from cookbook author Gena Knox.

You Say Tomato...
You would think with all the canning, ketchup-making and BLT-eating I've been doing in an effort to keep up with my overly-enthusiastic tomato plant that I would be all tomato-ed out. In actuality, I still can't get enough of them, which is why I've already made my reservations for La Tavola Trattoria's 8th annual Tomatofeast!
From Wednesday, July 28 (that is tomorrow!) through Saturday, August 7, tomato-obsessed Atlantans can load up on favorites à la carte or choose the $30 three-course prix fixe menu. Be sure to check out the entire menu online and make your reservations early because once Tomatofeast is gone there is a whole lot of waiting until next year's season returns.
Now back to that canning...

Memorial Day Eats

Picnic rained out? Need to get away from house guests? Just looking for some good eats on Memorial Day? We've pulled a list of some of our favorites to save you the trouble of calling around. Have a wonderful holiday!
- Ray's in the City will be open for dinner from 5 - 9 p.m., serving fine American fare and some of the best meats and seafood in town. It's located downtown and could be a nice stop if you're going to one of the attractions or just stopping in on your way home from the airport.
- Marlow's Tavern, with six locations convenient to wherever you may be spending Memorial Day, will be open serving mouthwatering American Tavern fare in a comfortable neighborhood setting. Nothing says "work-free Monday" like Kettle Chips and a cold beer.
- If you're in the mood for some homemade pasta and a nice glass of Chianti, head over to La Tavola for a quality visit with Chef Craig Richards. Open regular hours.
- For a memorable margarita and some fish tacos, you'll need to get to The Original El Taco in the Highlands pronto. Open regular hours on Monday.
- Tired of hamburgers and hotdogs? Take a virtual trip to the Mediterranean and dine at Ecco. We recommend the goat cheese balls drizzled with honey. Open regular hours.
- Midtown residents will be happy to know that they can celebrate this special day nearby at RA Sushi. There are always great specials and you know you'll have fun.
- Pretend you're in Southeast Asia and spice up your holiday at Spice Market. Open all day.
- Looking for a casual and delicious finale to the weekend? Look no further than beloved tavern Atkins Park. Both locations (Smyrna and Virginia Highlands) are open.
- Start a new Memorial Day tradition of bocce, darts, and skee ball at Ormsby's. More fun than a picnic - and no ants!
- Tell the bartender that you'll have a Swirl and your 3-day weekend is complete at Uncle Julio's (Perimeter and Peachtree Road). Trust me on this one.
